Vaishya Mahuri Community

Vaishya Mahuri Community is very handful in population, mostly concentrating and residing to GAYA, KODARMA(Jhumritelaiya) and GIRIDIH District towns and its surrounding places of BIHAR and JHARKHAND states. If we compare with other vaishya's population, it will be found to be virtual dearth of Mahuris among all.

The history of Mahuris is not very old, it is of 400 years of age and very interesting one, prior to that Mahuris originally belong to Mathura in State of UP. Audio Visual clip can be viewed on  link    http://youtu.be/H0gN217hrs8

H.H.PISLAY, I C S , has written about Mahuri Cast in his book "Tribes and Casts of Bengal"  in the year 1891,then Bihar and Bengal was same state
The book was published by Bengal sachiwalya page no 44 contains about Mahuris.
Mahuri, a sub caste of Bania in Bihar who occupy nearly as high a rank as Agarwalas in social estimate, like Sikhs, Mahuri strictly prohibit use of tobacco and a man detected smoking would be expelled from Community   Another peculiar usage is that marriage are always celebrated in the bridegrooms house not at bride. Trade and moneylending are the proper occupation of the Mahuris. Some of them have acquired substantial tenures and sat up as landlords and Zamindars.

Moughal Ruler Aurangzeb one time decided to convert entire population of the country to his Religion which Mahuris could not dare the conversion and left Mathura for ever and reached to GAYA town with 700 families for permanent settlement. This hiding place of Mahuris traced by the Moughal Ruler, troops were sent to GAYA to evade the city. Mahuris, who, in no time spread to near by places, suburbs and even in dense forest of KODARMA and GIRIDIH, most of them mixes with other Hindu population too. The position of Giridih at that time considered to be very interior ones, where visits from other places were nearly impossible then, they did not move to some very fertile places, where trace could have been be very easy.   This become turnning point of handful of Mahuris further split for more then a Century together, union become possible only on Barbigha meet in the year 1926 only. Mahuris were fundamentally very strong and having no illicit habit of drinking, smoking etc., pure vegetarian then even not eating onion and garlic, made their position strong where ever they stayed, most of them become zamindars, good businessmen and promising industrialists of the places.

Presently, the alarming population of Mahuris are further reducing due to fastly entering into inter cast marriages by Mahuris youngsters taking higher education , feeling suffocation with handful population, not finding desirous educating match up to their norms, ultimately finding match in other cast. Though, Mahuris are in noway behind now, they are competing every field and achieving desired posts, performing well, the fact is not well spread due to dearth of Mahuris meet and communication gap to know each other, once acquainted, youngsters will prefer marry   in within   Mahuri cast rather others. Where as, remaining Mahuris mostly bound to marry in near relation only, a few cases marriages with even second cousins create havoc within the society. Certainly, they are seriously thinking for merger and expansion according to their norms within vaishya communities who are, inter alia, at least vegetarian  in home.
